Learn WordPress: a Workshop with Karma Bennett

At last month’s meeting we gave you tips on improving your website, now we’ll teach the skills to do it, in a hands-on workshop on WordPress. The workshop will be held over Zoom, so you can beautify your website from the comfort of your own computer.

What Is WordPress?

WordPress is a way for you to run a website without having to know a single line of code. Just as you don’t have to know how to code to write an email in Gmail, WordPress is an interface that you can use to create content for your website.

• WordPress is open source, so it is free forever.
• It is incredibly popular. 37% of all websites on the Internet run on WordPress… including this one!

Why Writers Need this Workshop

1. Save money. WordPress is designed for noncoders to use, so you shouldn’t have to hire a coder or web designer just to update your promotions of your books on your site. Save money by taking this workshop.
2. Increase engagement. You should have a blog or news area where you update your fans on your readings, publications, research, and ruminations. Taking this workshop will make blogging easier and make your posts more beautiful. And if you’re more familiar with what WordPress can do, you’ll feel comfortable blogging more often.
3. Test it out. If you don’t use WordPress currently, you can use this Workshop to decide if it is right for your next web project.
4. Make editors want to hire you. If you get hired to write for someone else’s site, there is a good chance it will be on WordPress. Having WordPress expertise is a marketable skill for writers.

Karma Bennett is a marketing strategist and publishing pro who has been working with WordPress for over ten years… let’s dispense with the formalities, shall we? I’m Karma! I’m writing this post on WordPress right now, since I built this website for the CWC Berkeley, where I am currently serving as president.

I’ve been excited to share my knowledge of WordPress with the Berkeley branch because I know how many authors hesitate to update their websites (or even get a website!). I have made so many enthusiastic WordPress converts in marketing strategy courses I’ve taught at AcademyX, BAVC, and UC Berkeley extension. I built my WordPress classes on experiences I had with author clients at my digital marketing business Future Is Fiction Communications. Those classes grew out of speaking engagements at WordCamp Seattle, the San Francisco Writers Conference, and as a speaker at various branches of the California Writers Club! So it’s all come full circle. I can’t wait to bring this workshop home to the Berkeley branch.
