About the Virginia Prentiss Fund
The Virginia Prentiss Fund is named for Jack London’s patroness, Virginia/Ginny/Jenny Prentiss. You all know who Jack London is, but did you know his accolades were all made possible by a Black American who was enslaved at birth? Virginia was a family friend and neighbor who became Jack’s nanny and then foster mother. She encouraged him to develop his talents, and loaned him the money to buy his first boat. Learn more about Virginia Prentiss on Oakland Wiki & Wikipedia.
In the spirit of Jack London’s commitment to opportunity for all, plus his significant writings on socialism and equitable, supportive societies, the Berkeley Branch established this “Writers Helping Writers” fund in 2018 to protect our longstanding tradition of being open to all who are touched by the muse. With meetings fees for other writing groups costing up to $35 per meeting, we’re committed to being accessible to all.
We DO have to pay our bills, but also want to be able to say no one is turned away for lack of funds. (Our motto! NOTAFLOF!) Let’s do this together.

If you are able to afford a subscription, we hope you will take this opportunity to donate, and receive a subscription all the meetings, held on the third Sunday of every month Sept-May. You will still need to register for all the meetings. Use the Promo Code “VP” to get a free meeting ticket.
Commit to your writing career, and support other writers!
Donations to the Virginia Prentiss fund are welcome at any time.
