NOW is the time to subscribe to our monthly speaker series!

For only $40, you can drop into any of our 9 scheduled meetings from September through May. That’s a $5 savings for members, AND the satisfaction of knowing you’ll never have to fish around in your wallet when you arrive, you’ll never have to go through the hassle of swiping a credit card with everything else going on.

Don’t think you’ll make it to all 9 meetings? If you miss a meeting, your $5 will go to a great cause instead. All unused subscription fees will go to our Jack and Jenny Equity fund. This fund gives us the ability to stand behind our values.

Here’s how it works: The member price for meetings is $5. If you came to all 9 meetings, you’d pay $50 for that. Pre-pay by September 15th each year to get the most out of the annual subscription. Or purchase it at any time for speedier sign-ins and to support the club.

About the Jack and Jenny Fund

The Jack & Jenny (J&J) Fund is named for charter member Jack London and his patroness, Virginia/Ginny/Jenny Prentiss. You all know who Jack London is, but did you know his accolades were made possible by Virginia Prentiss? A former slave and Jack London’s foster mother, she made his career possible, including loaning him the money to buy his first boat. Learn more about Virginia Prentiss.

In the spirit of Jack and Jenny’s commitment to opportunity for all, and Jack’s significant writings on socialism and equitable, supportive societies, the Berkeley Branch established this “Writers Helping Writers” fund in 2018 to protect our longstanding tradition of being open to all who are touched by the muse. With meetings fees for other writing groups costing up to $35 per meeting, we’re committed to being accessible to all. We DO have to pay our bills, but also want to be able to say no one is turned away for lack of funds. (A.k.a. NOTAFLOF!) Let’s do this together.

For Virginia’s Sake, Sign Up!

If you are able to afford a subscription, we hope you will take this opportunity to pre-pay all your meetings, held on the third Sunday of every month Sept-May. Checks are accepted at our meetings as well.

Commit to your writing career, and support other writers!

Donations to the Jack & Jenny fund are welcome at any time.

Kevin Fisher-Paulson, the author of A Song for Lost Angels, will present a workshop on the art of memoir, or How-to-Tell-the- Truth-About-Your Life-and- Still-Keep-People-Reading. The author talks about the examined life, how he found himself and his meaning through telling his unique story to the world.

Practical techniques are discussed about “mining” one’s own life, and finding the voice, the words and the atmosphere to give it meaning.

Join us for this dynamic experience with Kevin, who will immediately make you feel at home and work closely with us to better our writing. While targeting memoir storytellers, these tools will be helpful to any author who has a story to tell, whether through fictionalized characters or our own lives.

Kevin Fisher-Paulson is the author of A Song for Lost Angels. He is also included in When Love Lasts Forever, by Pilgrim Press.

He has also produced theater work for the Next Wave Festival, Theater Rhinoceros, The National AIDS Theater Festival and written for the NPR Perspective Series. He studied writing at the University of Notre Dame, with continued coursework at the University of Iowa and the University of Oregon.

When not writing, Kevin serves as Captain of the Honor Guard for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
