The average book today sells only about 250 copies per year and 3,000 in its lifetime. Improve your odds of becoming a successful author by producing a business plan for your book before you write a word. As you do, you develop an Author Attitude, craft a marketable book idea, and evaluate your idea and yourself through a publishing professional’s lens. You also develop a career plan to help you reach your goal: successful authorship.

 

At our September meeting, learn how to determine if your book is not only a great creative idea but also marketable product—a viable business venture. Go through the Author Training Process, the foundation for creating books that sell—to publishers and to readers! This nine-step evaluation tool helps you determine if your book is ready to go to market—to be shopped to agents, publishers or readers—and if you are ready to become an author.

The market for audiobooks is exploding due to the growing number of computers, smartphones, and tablets, which make it easy for the consumer to purchase and instantly listen to their favorite books. Interestingly, Amazon has seen this trend and purchased Audible a few years ago. They also own ACX, which is the major distributor of audiobooks to Amazon, Audible, and iTunes, the three big platforms for audiobook sales.

The digital platform is another way to easily repurpose the content of books while tapping into more channels of distribution, which means more people being exposed to your book resulting in more sales and royalty payments for you. Howard Van Es will show you how to turn your book into an audiobook and tap into this hot trend in book sales.

In addition to running his company, Van Es is also author of 30 books of his own and has ghostwritten many others for clients. He is also the former owner and creative director of an award winning advertising agency.

Join us on the third Sunday in October, when Jim Azevedo, Marketing Director of Smashwords, will reveal the best practices of the most commercially successful self-published Ebook authors.

Jim will discuss:

  • metadata–what it is and how to use it–
  • leveraging viral catalysts to make your book stand out,
  • using pre-orders,
  • creating covers, and
  • addressing global market opportunities.

Jim’s can-do attitude is also a result of his DIY ethic, cultivated through 10 years of hard work drumming and promoting for the San Jose rock band Rivals. Rivals, about to release its sixth record, has played hundreds of shows, gone on multiple tours, and was recently named a Top 5 local band finalist by Bay Area alternative rock station Live105.

We’re so proud to feature our very own Lloyd Lofthouse as our speaker this Sunday. Lloyd, the author of the award-winning My Splendid Concubine historical novels and much more, has years of experience in successful self-publishing. He is also a generous mentor to the club, keeping up the club’s marketing blog as a dual member of two branches.

But wait, there’s more! Alon Shalev, author of five novels (several of them published by Lloyd’s publishing house, Three Clover Press), will be our featured club author who opens for Lloyd.

Both Lloyd’s and Alon’s literary success are tied to the club, as the two of them founded our Marketing Success Group. This group meets on Sundays at 1pm before the meeting, and like all of our support/critique groups, guests are welcome to audit one meeting before joining the club.

We hope to see you Sunday for this exciting celebration of good writing and successful publishing. Lloyd’s talk is entitled, “You CAN Get Published,” and this duo is proof of that. The meeting is from 2-4:30, with plenty of time for networking with other writers, and the location is the Oakland Public Library (enter on Madison Street).
