How to Best Use Major Moments to Create Excitement
and a Deep Emotional Bond with Your Readers

Martha Alderson plot whispererSunday Oct 16th We Plot, and
The Plot Whisperer Will Answer
Our Plot Quandries via Skype

Five major scenes or moments in a story carry energetic surges that are powerful enough to turn the dramatic action of the story in an entirely new direction, create an entirely new level of intensity in the story, and contribute to its thematic significance. Whenever possible, identify these four energetic markers early in the writing process.

At Sunday’s meeting Martha Alderson, AKA the Plot Whisperer, will show you how to identify and make the most of these crucial energetic markers in your plot. She’ll teach us to “show” plot and school us in the Universal Story.

About Sunday’s Speaker, Martha Alderson

Martha Alderson is a historical novelist and the best-selling author of The Plot Whisperer. More recently, she has expanded her work to include helping people transform their creative lives. She has authored 6 additional plot books, including her newest release Writing Blockbuster Plots: A Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering Plot, Structure, and Scenes, and produced 4 online video programs for writers.

She just released her historical novel Parallel Lives. Martha takes readers and writers alike beyond the words and into the very heart of a story. She lives and writes in Santa Cruz and blogs about writing and a writer’s life at the award-winning Plot Whisperer blog.

Kevin Fisher-Paulson talks about how to honor the creative self within everyone. As Kevin explains, everyone has an autobiography, but not everyone has a memoir. In this talk, Kevin talks about activities, not habits, that usher the individual through the creative door.

SFLACover2

On November 15th, Kevin will talk about his book, A Song for Lost Angels, (out on November 1!) and how the artist must be honest and open and ready to leap, for the net will appear. Join us Sunday, June 21st for a panel discussion about public speaking! Our panelists are:

  • Award winning author Judith Marshall, member of the CWC Mt Diablo Branch. Judith knows her stuff! When she talks about her novel, Husbands May Come and Go, But Friends Are Forever, it is clear that she has a passion for writing and the industry that goes with it. Image is everything, and Ms. Marshall commands a room when she walks in. She will offer tips on being prepared, speaking with confidence, and perfecting the verbal pitch.
  • Kymberlie Ingalls, President of the CWC Berkeley Branch, who knows what it’s like to be terrified of public speaking. Having to overcome obstacles every day that make this task a challenge, she can relate these experiences and will encourage you to build yourself up and hold yourself steady. This is an important skill when participating in readings, industry speeches, and networking a room. And finally,
  • Roger Ingalls, who comes to us from another industry as a high-tech professional with 30 years of experience in marketing and sales. He knows the power of a presentation and how to get the job done. Ingalls will offer insight to what can make or break a deal.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Click here for information about location and time.

Alon Shalev lives and writes in two worlds. He is the author of three social justice-themed novels and an award-winning epic-fantasy series. He swears there is a connection.

His first epic fantasy novel, At the Walls Of Galbrieth, won the Eric Hoffer Book Award – YA Category ,and was a Grand Prize Finalist. All his fantasy novels, published by Tourmaline Books, are first presented to Shalev’s sons, his harshest critics, each summer in a six-year family ritual. Book 5 will be released this summer and Book 6 in early 2016.

Shalev continues to write in both genres. Following the success of The Accidental Activist, Three Clover Press released Unwanted Heroes, which brings together an old, battle-scarred Chinese American war vet and an idealistic and pretentious young Englishman who share a love for San Francisco, coffee, and wine. Both are haunted by repressed memories of a tragic past. Shalev wrote a sequel and will discuss the complexities of building a series in both genres.

“Bones In the Wash” with John Byrne Barry — Sunday, October 19th

Screen Shot 2014-09-27 at 11.29.56 PMWith the midterm elections almost upon us, and more stories about politicians making it harder for people to register and vote, we thought it would be a good time to invite local author John Byrne Barry to talk about his novel — Bones in the Wash: Politics is Tough. Family is Tougher — set during the 2008 presidential campaign in New Mexico.

Albuquerque Mayor Tomas Zamara knows that politics is like playing football on a muddy field. If you don’t get dirty, you’re not giving your all. The Democrats’ Barack Obama is drawing adoring crowds with his soaring speeches, and Zamara’s GOP bosses are pressuring him to do “whatever it takes” to deliver New Mexico’s five electoral votes for John McCain.

Challenging him every step of the way is fierce young Democracy Project Director Sierra León, who calls on the mayor to listen to his better self and reject his party’s dirty tricks, echoing the voices in his conscience.

The mayor has his hands full — he’s also grappling with a volatile new woman, a demanding family, and when a flash flood unearths the skeleton of his long-disappeared wife, he becomes a suspect in his wife’s murder.
