MLK Write in before this Sunday’s speaker

Before this Sunday’s event at Gilman Street Brewery, we’re hosting a write-in with prompts inspired by Martin Luther King Day.

Might you spare me a moment to convince you to join me? Great writing has changed history in every era; don’t you agree? To that end we host write-ins on days of action like Earth Day and MLK Day. Such holidays are for setting aside time to take actions in honor of our values. It’s too easy to let the weekends slide by. The write-in is a rewarding ritual to transform our feelings and beliefs into an object that can be shared, absorbed and understood. Have you put down on paper everything you feels need to be said about justice and equality? Have you set aside time this weekend for a ritual to honor Martin Luther King Day?

That’s why we’re gathering for a write-in prior to the CWC Speaker this Sunday, with writing prompts inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His essay “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” inspired me to participate in direct action organizing, and thus I can say changed my life. And his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop Speech” is so powerful it moves me to tears. Let MLK remind us all that writing matters. But you don’t have to write speeches. Whether you write poetry, science fiction or protest placards, your words can reach people. And writing around equality and social progress are so needed right now. If you agree that we should set aside time in our writing to reflect on these themes, I hope that you’ll join me Sunday!

Of course, you should also attend because we have a fantastic speaker lined up, Deborah Pardes. As the world turns to bits and bites, she’s going to discuss honing your own Authentic Instinct. Learn more about the keynote or get tickets on Eventbrite.

Following the keynote, we’ll gather for an intimate and lively support group where you can seek advice on how to reach the next steps in your writing career. This event will be in-person at Gilman Street Brewery. Find us in the back room, among the barrels full beer and atmosphere. Have a peek at Gilman’s food menu before you go.

Thank you for setting aside the time for writing about social justice. I look forward to writing, and hearing what others are thinking about this critical time in our history. The talk about authentic intuition is appealing, so I bought a ticket. I look forward to a meal and a meeting of like-minded creatives.
