An Interview with Poet Paul Corman-Roberts, Poet and Founder of Beast Crawl

Get to Know the Featured Member who is Leading our Cracking Open the Poetic Voice Workshop

We’re excited to introduce January’s featured member, and the leader of our next workshop, Paul Corman-Roberts. His second full-length collection Bone Moon Palace will be released by Nomadic Press Winter 2021, as well as the chapbook 19th Street Station from Fashion For Collapse Publications. Previous collections include Notes From An Orgy (Paper Press, 2014) and We Shoot Typewriters (Nomadic Press, 2015.) He currently teaches workshops with the San Francisco Creative Writing Institute, California Writer’s Club and To Live and Write in Alameda, and is an original co-founder of Oakland’s Beast Crawl Literary Festival (yes, it will return in 2021!). He is also a substitute teacher with Oakland Unified and sometimes fills in as a drummer for the U.S. Ghostal Service.

Four Questions for Poet Paul Corman-Roberts

What one thing has helped promote your writing most?

Social media, no question. I was able to use it to land my first three book deals and to blow up my profile by booking with public readings that also made extensive use of social media.

Not only is Paul our featured member, he’ll be leading a workshop for us on the 28th.

What are your writing habits?

Honestly, I just do it when I feel like it. I’m lucky I want to write more than I want to exercise or make practical-headed decisions. I know if I go long enough without writing, a lot of pressure will build up until I have to, so I try to be proactive and try not to reach those points.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Sigh. Superman. Because he could fly. And bullets didn’t hurt him. And he was an alien.

What other writers inspire you?

Italo Calvino, Mary Shelley, Octavia Butler, Roberto Bolano.
