Berkeley Branch Writing Contests

The annual Write On! Story Contest, formerly The WestSide Story Contest, is open to all genres of literary fiction. The contest is in its sixth year. It is now hosted by the Berkeley Branch of the California Writers’ Club. Founded in the early 1900s by Jack London, the CWC is the third oldest professional writers club in the country

GRAND PRIZE: $250.00

2nd Prize: $100.00

3rd Prize: $50.00

Judge: Marilyn Abildskov

This year’s judge, Marilyn Abildskov, is the author of The Men in My Country, a memoir set in Japan. Her fiction, essays, and poems have been published in such literary magazines as Puerto del Sol, Hotel America, New Orleans Review, and Southern Review. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and teaches in the MFW Program at Saint Mary’s College of California.

The three prize-winning stories will be published on our website at: cwc-berkeley.com. Authors of honorary mentions will be credited by name and title of their work.

Entry Fee per story: $13

Submission Window: July 1 – October 1, 2010

Winners will be notified in the first week of November.

Submission Guidelines:

Marilyn likes stories with a compelling storyline, memorable characters, and situations that seem true.

All submissions must be in English, previously unpublished, 2200 words or fewer, double-spaced, 12pt serif type. Please put your name, address, e-mail address, story title and word count on the cover page. In the manuscript, story title only. Please indicate in your query letter where you have heard about us.

Electronic and paper submissions, as well as multiple entries and entries from outside the U.S. are welcome. Entrants retain rights to their stories and are responsible for all copyright issues related to their work.

      Claudia, New posts went up today for events this month. More will be added. We haven’t had administrative access to the site to update the information until today.
