Please join us on Sunday, June 7th, at the Oakland Public Library, in celebrating our community’s young writers! The winners of the California Writers Club – Berkeley Branch will be awarded with prizes and praise, and selected winners will read their stories.

Where: Oakland Public Library Main Branch, Bradley C. Walters Community Room. (location info)

When: 2-4pm, Sunday, June 7th

Who: Students, Teachers, Families

This event is free and open to the public! Please invite your friends and family in celebrating the creativity of our children and the triumph of our teachers.

Please spread the word far and wide to East Bay fifth-grade students and teachers that our 29th Annual Fifth Grade Story Contest is now open for entries! Information about this contest can be found on our website here.

Students can work on polished pieces of writing (a reward in itself) and win cash prizes. The winning story is posted on our website. Special Alert: The deadline has been extended to May 1st, 2015!

5th Grade Story Contest Winners Announced!

The Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club congratulates the writers and their teachers for the hard work, creativity, and excellence expressed in the prize-winning short stories.

We invite the fifth-grade students, their families, teachers, and friends to celebrate at an awards ceremony, where all winners will be awarded certificates, and the following prizes will be handed out:

 1st Place will receive $100
2nd Place will receive $75
3rd Place will receive $50
Seven 4th-Place winners will receive $20
The teacher of the 1st-place winner will receive $50

 Students will be invited to read aloud their prize-winning stories before the prizes are awarded. Refreshments will be served.

When: 2:00 to 4:00, Sunday, June 15

Join the Friends of Joaquin Miller Park to celebrate their fifth annual meeting, and stay for a CWC writerly event, Writing in the Park.

Learn about the CWC’s role in creating the Park, especially the Woodminister area, which includes the California Writers Memorial Grove.

Local historian and former CWC member Dennis Evanosky will speak on “The Great Redwood Grab.”

Why: Joaquin Miller Park is the birthplace of the CWC! Win a prize for your story about the Park

Cost: Free. Donations are always appreciated.

While the Baywood Picnic Area is ADA accessible, the City plans to close the gates at the end of the FoJMP meeting. If CWC members cannot walk the 0.1 mile up to the parking lot at the Ranger Station, let Linda know. We will hold the writerly event at the Ranger Station instead of the Meadow.
